For #BiodiversityDay, we want to show you Lobelia’s work mapping suitable habitats based on #EO to identify biodiversity-rich areas and guide conservation efforts where they are most needed. Our company is named after Lobelia plants, known for their resilience. Check out the habitat suitability map for Lobelia tupa below. This species native to Chile is of great importance to Mapuche communities. By combining occurrence data from the GBIF: The Global Biodiversity Information Facility with bioclimatic information from #Worldclim, we model the probabilities of the species finding suitable conditions in different areas. We want to share some good news on International Day for Biological Diversity. The biodiversity monitoring program promoted annually by The Navigator Company led to the discovery of a nucleus of rhododendrons in 2023, on a property managed by the Company in the Oliveira de Azeméis area. This finding is significant, not only because this species is very rare, but also because its occurrence in Portugal was only known, so far, in two distinct nuclei: in the Vouga basin and the Monchique Mountains area. A new nucleus outside these areas represents an important record of this endemic species of the Iberian Peninsula. The well-preserved habitat where it is found was already under protection by Navigator but will now be monitored more regularly. Also known by the common name of oleander, the rhododendron (𝑅ℎ𝑜𝑑𝑜𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑑𝑟𝑜𝑛 𝑝𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑢𝑚 𝑠𝑢𝑏𝑠𝑝 𝑏𝑎𝑒𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑢𝑚) is considered a relic of the Laurisilva forest. Navigator's responsible forest management strategy allows for reconciling biodiversity conservation values with production objectives. The rhododendron is one of the 1,057 species and subspecies of flora identified and protected in the Company's managed forest heritage. At Nature FIRST, we are testing preventive solutions for biodiversity conservation in the Maramures region, spanning Romania and Ukraine. This region represents a pinnacle of biodiversity, with dense forests and cultural landscapes, making it a crucial part of the Carpathian wilderness. Due to the region’s unique location on the border of Romania and Ukraine, particular challenges come with it and multi-faceted approaches and collaborations are necessary. But why are these collaborations so important? Why are transboundary biosphere areas essential for biodiversity conservation in Europe? What does this mean in terms of policy making? The Danube Region encompasses a wide range of diverse but interrelated and interdependent ecosystems, including the Danube with its tributaries, lowlands and delta, the major part of the Carpathian Mountains, the Balkans and part of the Alps. As such, it is rich in diverse ecosystems that provide important habitat for numerous species. But because this unique region and its natural values are under growing pressure due to urban sprawl and the development of agriculture, industry, transport and tourism, often it is hard to prevent the loss of biodiversity and a variety of ecosystems (like wetlands and floodplain areas, primary and old-growth forests). The solution identified for these challenges was to identify experts and create and develop their networks so that a quite high number of topics could be approached. The Task Forces emerged from this point. The Task Forces now play an important role as NGOs in their own right by intervening in political decision-making processes. Part of the #danubestrategyflagship Task Forces – Stakeholder Involvement, multi-level governance, and joint implementation for the protection and preservation of the natural resources in the Danube Region, the DANUBEPARKS Task Force coordinates the Danube Protected Areas to preserve, develop and restore the Danube River, its main tributaries, and surrounding wetlands. The Danube Sturgeon Task Force coordinates and fosters the conservation and revival of native sturgeons in the Danube River Basin and the adjacent Black Sea. UEA Professor Carlos Peres co-authors ground-breaking new article for Frontiers which identifies key biodiversity havens which are home to rare wildlife. The research shows we must preserve these havens in order to protect Earth's remaining biodiversity. Professor Carlos Peres said: “There’s a dwindling window to protect what is left of the wild across Earth's ecoregions. Our analysis shows that setting aside a critical threshold of only 1.2% of all terrestrial areas – identified as nearly 17,000 sites – to ensure the persistence of endemic, threatened and rare species is a financially viable proposition, but I'm afraid this viability will rapidly decline over time."
