- Gaining a competitive advantage through learning is achieved by focusing on the business outcomes of the organization. Unfortunately, many L&D organizations focus on learning outcomes, such as number of people trained or number of hours of training consumed. Well, those are both good descriptive measurements that give no indication of business outcomes. The number of people taught or hours of instruction describe what the learning and development organization is doing, however, those measurements don't provide any information about the link between L&D and organizational outcomes or performance. The goal of organizational training is to make the organization better, it is to improve the business outcomes and to help the organization be successful. Success can only be achieved by creating measurable outcomes and expectations from learning and development efforts.
