- Non-binary? Pansexual? Agender? "Why do there have to be so many new terms? It's getting ridiculous." You may have heard people express this sentiment. You may even feel this way yourself. Let's talk about why new words are necessary and how to navigate the ever-growing list of terms. Words are created when there's a need. Every word was new once. Before the word staycation was invented, for example, people needed an entire sentence to explain that they were officially taking a vacation, but actually just hanging out at home. New and updated cultural words improve our understanding of ourselves and others, help us speak respectfully to and about each other, and make it easier for people to find community.
