Indigenous rights are not one size fits all

- In order to strengthen relationships with Indigenous Peoples in the workplace, it is important to understand some of the historical issues facing these communities. Across the globe, Indigenous Peoples are those who were living on the land prior to the arrival of settlers. They are the original inhabitants of the land and maintain ancestral connections to the land. They have distinct cultural, social, economic, and political characteristics unique to their community. For example, they're holders of diverse languages, traditional knowledge systems, and particular governance systems. Where we live in an increasingly globalized and diverse society, respect for Indigenous Peoples and their knowledge can improve your cultural competency skills in the workplace. Cultural competence is an ability to understand people and what makes them unique.
