Finding a small win

- New managers often make two common mistakes. The first is creating huge change immediately to make your mark and show your authority. Not smart, that just upsets and worries people. The second error is to just give the team something nice or something they want. This of course, is the equivalent of appeasing a child with candy instead of the nutrition they really need. So what's the answer here? The best answer is to target a small win. A small win is a task or project that will be meaningful to the team when accomplished, but one that is not enormous or too complex. Nothing is risk free, but the idea is to pick a piece of relatively low hanging fruit to quickly gain a little bit of momentum in your new role. Small wins come in many different forms. For example, you might set a goal to wrap up a pesky ongoing project by the end of the month. Maybe you adopt a new productivity technique to boost team output, or perhaps…
