Establishing your identity as a manager
- In the first month, your goal is to shift how you're viewed by everyone from being an employee to being a manager. I want you to focus on how you communicate really matters. To start, a bit more clarity, competence and formality should be evident now that you're a manager but don't assume you know how you sound. Go find a trusted friend or mentor who might tell you one or two ways you can positively improve your managerial communication style. More brief and focused comments, or more frequent use of questions and listening. You won't know until you ask. Next, realize that as the new supervisor, you're not trying to become friends with your employees. The goal is to develop positive and personal professional relationships.
