Effective listening behaviors

- So far, we have shared an array of listening barriers that exist in everyday conversations. Maybe you're thinking, "I've been guilty of each of these, and even some combinations." Now that we've explored the top five challenges to effective listening, let's turn our attention to the verbal and non-verbal responses that make us stellar listeners. How you respond in your words and actions when you listen will influence the quality of the conversation and the overall relationship with your conversation partner. The listening behaviors we will share and demonstrate include clarifying your listening role, using effective nonverbals, honoring silence, paraphrasing and clarifying your understanding, and last, mirroring nonverbals of the speaker, and matching their emotion. Let's look at each of these individually, and you can decide which ones need to make it on your action plan for further practice and refinement.
