How to actively listen

- Active listening is so essential to being a successful executive. So let me share with you a little bit about what that looks like. So when you're doing that base level of listening is when your mind wanders, and you're thinking about what am I going to have for lunch today? When is this meeting going to be over? Active listening, you've taken that out of your mind. You've parked it instead. You're fully engaged with the person that you're talking to. So I want you to do an exercise yourself, practice this. You want to listen to the other person for the meaning. You want to read their facial expressions, watch their body language, use your intuition. What is the feeling they're trying to convey, the mood, the pitch of their voice, all of those things, and clarify what they're saying. Make sure that you're totally in sync in terms of the meaning that they're trying to share with you or a point of view. This means that you're no longer in your own head and attached to your own thoughts and plans. You now have really opened up your mind to the possibility. You've created a position where you're receptive, and what you've shared with the person that you're speaking with is that you are fully engaged in a conversation. Trust opens up, the conversation opens. They're more inclined to share information with you. This creates a wonderful conversation and connection opportunity to be this type of listener.
