Understanding complicated versus complex
- When you're creating checklists and permits, it's really important to understand the limitations. As much as we might want to create a hard and fast, step-by-step list of rules, this is construction. It's difficult to anticipate every scenario. Some things are really complicated and it absolutely helps to develop a list of steps and a checklist for things that we don't want them to overlook in the field. But some scenarios are really complex and have multiple variables that might present themselves in many, different combinations or not at all. This is where I like to differentiate between complicated and complex. Complicated tasks are those that have many steps. Maybe some are tedious or difficult to remember. Maybe there are steps that have to be performed in a very specific sequence. And maybe there are multiple checkpoints where you want the steps inspected before proceeding.
