Building your empathy

- If you're going to step into bystander intervention and allyship, you need to gain an understanding of what people need from you and why. I'm talking about empathy. According to Daniel Goleman and Paul Ekman, there are three types of empathy. The first of which is cognitive, or simply knowing what the other person might be thinking. Emotional empathy is about feeling what another person is feeling. If someone seems anxious, for example, you can identify with that and put yourself in a similar emotional state. Third is compassion. If we know what someone's feeling, we can allow it to affect us. And now we are motivated to act. The LEAP framework developed by Dr. Stephanie Creary is a great pathway to demonstrate all three types of empathy. L stands for listen and learn.
