iOS changes every advertiser must know

- If you're advertising on Facebook or an Apple device user, you have heard buzz around the new Apple software updates, affecting advertisers. A bit of background. Apple mobile devices run on software called iOS. If you use an iPhone, you'll have seen a prompt requesting you to update your iPhone when a new version comes out. This software enables you to run apps. The Facebook and Facebook-owned Instagram app, being some of the most downloaded apps in the world. When you download the Facebook app on your phone, Facebook is able to then track your activity on that app, and even your web browsing. This information becomes valuable targeting data that Facebook then offers to advertisers. So what happens when that targeting data gets restricted? Well, that's exactly what Apple announced on April 20th, 2021, with a general release of iOS 14 software update. And that left a lot of advertisers scrambling, and worried about the impact it'll have on the effectiveness of their ads. In the iOS 14 and likely future software updates from Apple, users get asked through a prompt on their screen when opening each app, whether or not they're willing to be tracked, and most users are saying no.
