Phoenix Color®, a recent acquisition of Lakeside Book Company, is a premier full-service, full-color printer with over 40 years of superior print experience and plays an important role in Lakeside Book's manufacturing network contributing significantly to the business earnings. Drawing on a broad spectrum of materials and decorative technologies, Phoenix Color® produces memorable, value-added components, heavily-illustrated books and specialty commercial products.

Phoenix Color® has been servicing the publishing industry within the United States since 1979 and has formed lasting relationships with some of the biggest names in book publishing.

As a domestic manufacturer, we offer extensive, in-house digital pre-press capabilities and our technologically advanced UV printing platform supports an array of printing and finishing options. Our innovative special effects include foil stamping, UV embellishments and laminations, as well as our trademarked products LithoFoil®, MetalTone™, Look of Leather™ and VibraColor™.

As VP of Phoenix Color, you’ll have responsibility of the overall performance of the P&L, inclusive of safety, quality, delivery, cost and earnings. You will oversee plant performance and assume P&L responsibilities for two successful manufacturing facilities in Hagerstown, MD (350 employees) and Terre Haute, IN (50 employees). You’ll help set the strategic direction for the P&L and the facilities and ensure they operate smoothly and efficiently. These re cent acquisitions play an important role in our manufacturing network and contribute significantly to our business earnings. Effectively leveraging the unique culture and manufacturing capabilities of these recent acquisitions while integrating into our existing platform structure will be a focus for 2024.

Work Hours: Standard Monday - Friday working hours

Location: Hagerstown, MD

Salary: $180,000-$240,000 base on experience

As our Vice President of Operations, you will:

  • Lead by example by driving a strong safety culture
  • Lead strategic planning efforts to enhance profitability, productivity and efficiency
  • Define and implement operations strategy, structure and processes
  • Lead the annual budgeting cycle
  • Monitor performance to proactively identify efficiency issues and propose solutions
  • Achieve budgeted safety, cost and productivity targets
  • Assess, upgrade and develop plant leadership capabilities
  • Support engagement and workforce retention efforts
  • Foster a continuous improvement mindset and methodology
  • Develop and utilize metrics and benchmarking for measuring/improving performance
  • Lead and direct cost/operational improvement projects
  • Support plant leadership in resolving immediate quality, production, scheduling, technical or staffing issues
  • Ensures compliance with all safety, environmental, local, and federal regulations.
  • Interact with sales and customers to identify and grow business opportunities
  • Lead cultural shift from public to private company

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 15+ years of progressive P&L leadership experience and operations leadership experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Implementation of continuous/process improvement systems
  • Cultural change
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to collaborate and build a consensus with staff and operations teams
  • Multi-site experience a plus
  • Print operations experience is desired
  • Acquisition experience a plus

Year 1 Objectives:

  • Deliver on earnings and productivity/cost targets
  • Ensure stability in the basics – safety, communication, maintenance, continuous improvement, cost management, quality, workforce relationships, process capability, training and visual management
  • Evaluate and develop plant leadership structure to support business growth
  • Lead the execution of capital plans and hiring to support high margin businesses
  • Benchmark facilities against other sites to drive standardization and improvement
