POSITION OVERVIEW Position Title Resource Education Intern NPS Unit Name Gulf Islands National Seashore Position Dates May 16, 2022 Position Description Gulf Islands National Seashore (GUIS) is looking for interns to learn what it means to work in the field of public history. Interns will provide visitor services at the park's Fort Pickens Area. As an intern, you will have the opportunity to share and foster an appreciation of African American history and the Underground Railroad, Civil War, and Reconstruction eras with visitors from all over the nation and the world. Interns will have the opportunity to receive firsthand training from experienced National Park Service (NPS) staff about the history and legacy of Gulf Islands. You will also be provided training in historical interpretation and historic weapons demonstrations by NPS professionals. This internship is ideal if you are a college student and majoring in African American Studies, History, Public History, Communication, Anthropology, or Education. Interns should feel comfortable in public speaking. Duties include: Leading guided tours of historic Fort Pickens and surrounding historic sites. Leading historic weapons demonstrations using 1800s weapons or kayaking programs. Meeting and greeting the public. Learning and producing digital media to interpret the site. Reviewing existing digital media and NPS website content. Reading and researching topics relating to African American Studies. Representing the National Park Service as an Intern. Learning other facets of the National Park Service such as the cultural/resource management, fee collection, and facility management. As an Intern, you will receive professional training and coaching in historic interpretation, special behind the scenes tours that are part of the training program, and experience in developing

Learning Goal The intern will learn about interpretation and interpretive techniques. Additionally, the intern

will gain experience in visitor services, public speaking, education, natural history, cultural

history, and resource management. Qualifications Completion of one year or more of undergraduate work. African American Studies, History,

Public History, Communication, Anthropology, Education, and Communication majors

preferred. Interest in or knowledge of American history, especially Gulf Coast culture and

history. Must be comfortable working aboard a passenger ferry operating on open water. Must

be comfortable handling historic weapons and conducting historic weapons firing demonstrations. Excellent public speaking skills and interpersonal abilities. Ability to work enthusiastically with audiences of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Ability to read,remember, and transmit accurate content according to interpretive goals. Positive attitude and ability to build respectful working relationships.

Participants must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent legal resident ( "green-card-holder) and currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or Ph.D. degree program at an accredited institution of higher education during the summer internship.

Additional Qualifications

• Must be currently enrolled or recent graduate of an accredited HBCU institution
• Must be between 16 and 30years of age
• Must be U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or U.S. national
• Must be able to pass a federal background check
• Must be fully vaccinated
  
  

Work Environment Work is conducted inside and outside. Indoors, work is done in a climate-controlled office and a

climate-controlled visitor center. Outside work may be performed on sandy uneven paths and

trails, inside a historic fort wearing period clothing and aboard a passenger ferry. Work may

also take place kayaking or snorkeling in Pensacola Bay. Summers are very hot and humid with

severe to extreme weather possible. A severe weather plan and evacuation plan are in place to

protect staff and visitors. Insects including mosquitos, no-see-ums, biting flies, and palmetto

bugs are common. Other wildlife commonly encountered are snakes, armadillos, birds, and

jellyfish.

Vehicle/License Requirement A personal vehicle is needed. Compensation and Benefits

• Compensation is at a rate of $15.00 per hour, 40 hours per week.
