Duties
- Working with individual pupils or groups of pupils on special instructional projects including, but not limited to, life space interviews and anger replacement strategies, Does related teaching assistant work as required.
- Providing the teacher with information about pupils which will assist the teacher in the development of appropriate learning experiences. This includes the completion on a physical intervention log, monitoring of time out space, and tracking student behavior patterns to facilitate plans for improvement.
- Assisting pupils in the use of available instructional resources, assisting in the development of instructional materials, and assisting pupils in utilizing constructive, effective ways to deal with frustration, failure, anger, pain and stress.
- Utilizing their own special skills and abilities by assisting in instructional programs and behavior management through assisting in the management of disruptive, assaultive and out of control student behavior by employing therapeutic physical intervention strategies as needed.
- Assisting in related instructional work including participating in treatment team meetings, demonstrating CPI preferred intervention approaches in managing students in crisis, i.e. behavior management techniques, non-verbal and verbal communication skills, problem solving skills and conflict resolution, training and updating other staff in effective behavior management techniques, and assisting in the development of agency policies and procedures for handling crisis.
- Does related teaching assistant work as required.
- Completion of Crisis Intervention training as a Crisis Intervention Worker. Completion of Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training through the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) as a Crisis Intervention Trainer is desirable.
- A minimum of one year experience working directly with emotionally disturbed students in an educational setting or equivalent.
- Possession of skills, knowledge, attitude and confidence to effectively deal with students in crisis, to be in control in a crisis situation, to help students learn and grow from the experience, and to respond to both feelings as well as outward behavior of a student in crisis.
- A strong desire to work with emotionally disturbed students
