Position Summary

The Senior Controls Optimization Engineer will have substantial experience designing, installing, and optimizing HVAC Building Automation System (BAS) and Energy Management Systems. As a senior engineer, you will be responsible for reviewing existing systems, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing methods to increase energy efficiency and system performance.

The engineer also oversees the development of scope, price, and energy savings for clients. The candidate must be goal-oriented and work together to create new solutions. Candidates that can blend engineering knowledge, expertise, creative solutions, and thorough and complete problem-solving skills will succeed. You will be responsible for establishing the most efficient future ASHRAE control strategies and operational sequences.


Responsibilities

•      Conducts on-site assessments in prospective buildings.

•      Collaborates with solutions engineers, BAS Techs, and Smart Buildings Groups to evaluate controls ECMs for total energy savings.

•      Develops engineering solutions to assist clients in meeting financial, technical, operational, and environmental objectives.

•      Have ASHRAE Level III and preconstruction experience.

•      Manage assessments from start to finish.

•      Define scopes and pricing for BAS-driven energy conservation measures.

•      Assist with client sales presentations.

•      Design and develop comprehensive building automation strategies to optimize HVAC systems and energy consumption.

•      Evaluate existing building automation systems, including controls, components, and sequences of operation.

•      Lead system completion efforts, ensuring proper installation, configuration, and functionality of building automation controls.

•      Analyze system performance data to identify trends and areas for improvement.

•      Develop and implement control modifications to improve energy efficiency and operational reliability.

•      Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians within the organization

•      Collaborate with clients to understand their particular requirements and provide tailored solutions that fulfill their objectives.

•      As a subject matter expert in building automation systems and energy management controls, provide insights and recommendations to stakeholders as needed.

·       Responsibilities include ongoing professional development and mentoring the engineering team.

•      Experience with BAS servicing, maintenance, repair, and replacement expenses throughout its life cycle.

•      Strategic financial planning for BAS throughout its life cycle.


Qualifications/Experiences/Skills

Qualifications:

•      Requirements include a bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or controls engineering, as well as relevant experience and training.

•      At least 10 years of expertise designing, deploying, and optimizing building automation systems and energy management controls.

•      Expertise with industry-standard building automation protocols including Haystack, BACnet, and Modbus.

•      Extensive knowledge of HVAC systems, including chillers, boilers, air handling units, and variable frequency drives.

•      Proven expertise in system commissioning, troubleshooting, and performance optimization.

•      Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to comprehend complicated data and make data-driven decisions.

•      Relevant industry certificates, such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM), LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP), and Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP), are highly valued.

•      Experience with ASHRAE or AEE is beneficial.


Experience:

•      Defining energy conservation measures 

•      Estimating project installation costs 

•      Estimating annual energy savings 

•      Proficient in Excel, Microsoft Office Suite, Salesforce, and energy best practices/codes (ASHRAE, IESNA, NEC).

•      Proven track record of project completion

•      Expertise in energy-efficient technologies.

•      Visualizes building components as part of a wider strategy to maximize efficiency.

•      Experience with electrical installations, including low voltage, power sources, panel builds, and communications trunks.

•      Expertise in controls construction documentation and processes, including RFIs, submittals, specifications, and testing.

•      Experience with various HVAC system types, including VAVs, VVTs, Dual Duct, four/two-pipe FCU, Heat Pumps, chillers, and boilers.

•      Development of controls solutions, including scopes and sequences for bidding.


Skills:

•      Experience with pneumatics, inlet vanes, and upgrading to DDC controls.

•  Knowledge of integration methods and data extraction from third-party equipment.

•      Familiarity with ALC product line and platforms.

•      Expertise in BAS systems, including sensors and instrumentation for system architecture.

•      Ability to understand drawings, schedules, control loops, and optimization techniques for valves, meters, and airflow stations.

•      Knows control theory and can tweak PID loops.

•      Demonstrates strong analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving abilities.

•      Possesses advanced computer skills.

•      Understands project management concepts.

•      Proficient in managing a diversified customer portfolio across several locations.

•      Strong interpersonal skills for building relationships.

•      Proven track record of sourcing and deploying new technology.

•      Current knowledge of energy efficiency technologies.

•      Collaborated with solution providers to optimize energy/utility efficiency in commercial, industrial, and healthcare facilities.

•      Possesses extensive knowledge of building services, including mechanical, HVAC, Building Automation System, electrical, and lighting.

•      Ability to travel and work after hours as needed.
