Job Summary

The Director of Plant Services develops and administers programs which maintain the physical appearance of hospital buildings, grounds and equipment, and inspects buildings and grounds in an effort to ensure that the hospital conforms to established standards and regulations. The Director reports to the Divisional Director of Facilities Operation and Construction. The Director plans and oversees major hospital repairs, establishes preventive maintenance schedules, selects and assigns departmental staff, establishes departmental standards for personnel performance evaluation, develops departmental operating budgets, monitors departmental statistical and financial information, and assists in determining priorities in the process of developing special projects. The Director develops departmental policies and procedures, investigates policy and procedure violations, controls the efficient procurement and use of equipment, and encourages employees to participate in approved continuing education activities. The Director also keeps the Divisional Director informed of departmental activities, directs departmental performance improvement programs, and ensures that all services provided by the department are performed with understanding and respect for others.

Experience Required

10 years in facilities management or engineering

  • Selects, trains, orients, and assigns departmental staff members in a manner that ensures efficient departmental operations and complies with relevant regulations governing the employment process. Implements and monitors departmental work schedules and duty assignments, and oversees departmental staffing levels in an effort to promote departmental efficiency and provide high quality health care services in a cost-conscious manner.
  • Program Management and Daily Operations
  • Develops, implements, administers, and modifies programs which maintain the hospital's physical plant, grounds, and equipment through the effective utilization of personnel and materials. Inspects buildings and grounds to ensure that the hospital conforms to established standards and regulations and the hospital's professional appearance is maintained.
  • Plans and oversees major hospital repairs, in an effort to maintain the hospital's professional appearance. Acts as a liaison in construction tie-ins of utilities and systems, and strives to ensure that quality services are provided.
  • Establishes preventive maintenance schedules and prioritizes repair and maintenance work in an effort to minimize disruption of hospital operations and provide efficient and cost-effective maintenance services.
  • Estimates future departmental personnel, equipment, and supply needs in order to ensure the attainment of operating goals and the provision of high quality health care services. Develops, recommends, and implements the annual capital equipment, personnel, and operating budget for the department. Conducts periodic reviews of departmental performance, analyzes budget variances, and implements responsive action.
  • Assists in determining priorities in the process of developing special projects and monitors the status of these projects on an ongoing basis in order to promote the hospital's provision of high quality health care services.
  • Reviews and controls the efficient procurement and use of equipment. Ensures that periodic equipment maintenance is carried out in a prudent and efficient manner that controls hospital costs, ensures patient safety, and promotes the provision of high quality health care services.
  • Performance Improvement and Quality
  • Establishes departmental standards for the evaluation of personnel performance in an effort to ensure efficient departmental operations, meet employee training and development needs, and promote the provision of high quality health care services by the department. Monitors and evaluates the performance of reporting personnel and strives to ensure that all employees are treated fairly and with compassion and respect.
  • Prepares and monitors departmental statistical and financial information and generates high quality reports detailing performance deficits. Promotes the provision of high quality health care services and prudent hospital management by correcting identified performance deficits.
  • Develops departmental policies and procedures that ensure the prudent and efficient provision of high quality health care services. Monitors the application of departmental and organizational policies and procedures, investigates policy and procedure violations, reviews relevant incident reports, and recommends appropriate action.
  • Promotes and encourages the growth and development of all personnel by encouraging their participation in approved continuing education activities such as professional conferences, seminars, and workshops. Advocates continuing education as a means of promoting the high quality services provided by all departmental personnel.
  • Keeps the Divisional Director informed of the department's activities, needs, and problems in order to promote departmental efficiency and maintain the provision of quality health care services within the department.
  • Directs departmental performance improvement programs that further the attainment of optimum health care service outcomes. Promotes participation in multi-disciplinary continuous quality improvement efforts, ensures compliance with applicable regulatory agency and JCAHO guidelines, and ensures that all services provided by the department are performed with compassion, understanding, and respect for others.
