The Opportunity

Tradewater is seeking a Director of Data Strategy & Architecture to lead our enterprise architecture, integrating business processes, data, and supporting technologies. This role demands a combination of strategic vision and hands-on technical expertise to design, implement, and evolve our technical infrastructure as we continue to grow.

While expertise in every technology or system isn't required, extensive knowledge of common hardware and software, as well as familiarity with database management, project information systems, and data analysis procedures, is essential.

This position will report to the Chief People & Culture Officer. While Tradewater is based in Chicago, we are open to working virtually as we have offices and team members around the world.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Team Leadership & Management: Supervise 2-4 team members, providing training, professional development, and project scheduling
  • System and Tool Management: Oversee internal systems and tools to ensure cohesive and consistent usage organization-wide, addressing departmental needs. Leverage data to provide actionable insights for business decisions
  • Data Integration: Document, map, and consolidate data from various systems and external sources to enhance reporting capabilities
  • Process Development: Establish and maintain processes that ensure data integrity, scalability, and best practices for all systems and project requests.
  • Infrastructure Leadership: Manage physical equipment and IT systems, working closely with our third-party IT providers
  • Website Guidance: Oversee website development and maintenance to ensure seamless system integration and an optimal user experience
  • Network and Data Architecture: Implement cloud-based data storage and computing solutions. Support the data & analytics team in developing reports, dashboards, databases, data warehouses, CRM tools, and web applications, incorporating new technology trends where appropriate to add efficiency, effectiveness and relevancy (e.g. AI, automation)
  • Data Analysis: Apply advanced analytics principles to address business needs and provide strategic insights (i.e. forecasting, statistical analysis, etc.). Use data to tell a story, translating complex analysis into easy to understand insights
  • Project Management: Manage and prioritize data and systems requests, maintaining clear communication with stakeholders and managing project timelines
  • Key Performance Indicator (KPI) Development: Collaborate with team members to develop KPIs for monitoring departmental performance

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s/master’s degree in computer science, Data Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, Engineering, or a closely related technical field or equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years of project management and system architecture experience, including constructing a system architecture from the ground up and/or scaling. At least 4 years of direct leadership experience
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to collect, analyze, and translate technical and business needs effectively to implement a holistic solution.
  • Highly organized, able to manage multiple projects, and communicate complex analysis to non-technical audiences.
  • Thirst for learning, ability to think creatively, and a drive to figure things out. Energized by pulling together a cohesive plan and the perseverance to see through
  • Hands-on experience with data visualization, relational databases, ETL processes, API design, query development, data warehouses, and data mining techniques
  • Proficiency in at least one coding language in addition to SQL (Python, R, etc.).
  • Experience with the research and implementation of AI, automation, version control (Github), website development (Wordpress, GoDaddy, Weebly), cloud computing (AWS, GCP), and business intelligence tools (Sisense, PowerBI, Tableau)
  • Understanding of sales and marketing data sets and their various sources (i.e. CRM, webforms, e-commerce, G4, etc.)
  • Understanding of advanced analytics principles and experience in applying them to various business needs (ex. forecasting, statistical analysis, etc.)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel. Deep knowledge of Excel to build reports and do analytics is a plus.
