Job Overview

Please join our team of dynamic leaders who support a diverse group of child life professionals in a top 10 children's hospital! Trained in the use of therapeutic play, recreation and educational techniques, our child life specialists guide children and teens throughout their treatment. These services are available to patients at Children's Colorado at no extra charge. As one of the largest and most innovative child life programs in the country, our Child Life Department is leading the way in improving the healthcare experience for kids through therapeutic play, connection, creativity, animal-assisted therapy, gaming and more. The Child Life Supervisor is responsible for leading, coaching, mentoring, modeling best practices, scheduling, managing Paid Time Off (PTO) and day-to-day performance for direct reports. The position provides oversight of patient care and manages patient flow for Child Life at CHCO, and is responsible for ensuring the best patient care possible is provided by child life staff.

Qualifications

EDUCATIONBachelor’s degree in Child Life, Child Development, Counseling Psychology, Social Work, Education, or related fields.

EXPERIENCE – Four years previous experience in providing child life services in a healthcare setting.

EQUIVALENCY – A Master or higher degree in a related field may substitute for the experience requirements on a year for year basis.

CERTIFICATION(S) Child Life Professional Certification (CCLS)

  • Essential Functions

    An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.

    • Mentors and supports staff on a daily basis, while creating a culture and atmosphere that will lead to a high level of employee engagement.
    • Assigns and reviews work, provides work instruction (OTJ or formal training) and develops team members. Evaluates performance of team members, providing continuous feedback. Addresses discipline and performance issues; hires and fires team members. Identifies resource needs and develops recommendations for meeting needs.
    • Supervises day-to-day activities of team members including, but not limited to, assigning and reviews work, provides work instruction, developing team members and time keeping administration.
    • Participates in labor cost and financial component decisions related to day-to-day operations.
    • Complies with all regulatory standards, hospital policies/procedures and quality/patient safety standards.
    • Acts as a working supervisor to assist with patient and family interactions and facilitating care plans; remains available to provide coverage as needed.
    • Establishes team communication norms and staff rounding.
    • Assists with the implementation and maintenance of department specific policies, procedures, and guidelines while ensuring consistency with evidence-based practice and organizational policies, standards, and procedures.
    • Resolves operational and patient/family issues, making decisions that are inclusive of multiple perspectives and solves underlying problems.
    • Assists team members in achieving unit outcomes, performance and professional development standards; identifies opportunities for continual improvement.
    • Monitors expenditures for unit/department and participates in the development of budget recommendations.

    SCOPE AND LEVEL

    Guidelines: Guidelines are in the form of stated objectives for the section, unit, function, or project. Is normally the first level of full supervision in a classification series. Performs most elements of supervision over 50% of the time. May also perform the work of front line staff as needed.

    Complexity: Work assignment is generally unstructured and employee is responsible for assigning and supervising a variety of functions to achieve the objectives of the section, unit, or project. Duties performed involve weighing and evaluating factors requiring judgment, analytical ability, and problem solving.

    Decision Making: Employee is responsible for simultaneous coordination and supervision of several functions, programs, or projects in various stages of completion. Primary responsibility for arranging and directing the work of two or more employees.

    Communications: Contacts are of a non-prescribed nature involving the negotiation and resolution of problems and where exceptional degrees of discretion, judgment, and specialized knowledge are required in carrying out the programs and policies of an organization.

    Supervision Received: Under managerial direction, the employee has personal accountability for carrying out the work objectives of an organizational unit or section within the scope of established guidelines and the mission of the organization or department. Employee is expected to resolve problems that arise in the normal course of the work. Work may be discussed with higher level supervisors and reviewed for soundness of judgment and feasibility of decisions.

    Salary Information

    Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $68,066.41 to $102,099.61

    Hourly Salary Range: $32.72 to $49.09
