Job Overview

The Child Life Supervisor leads a team of front-line clinical support staff. The supervisor is responsible for hiring, coaching, mentoring, modeling best practices, and monitoring the performance of child life team members. Child life supervisors contribute to the operational decisions and tasks related to the child life department. The position provides oversight of patient care and manages patient flow for Child Life and is responsible for ensuring appropriate care is provided by child life staff. The child life supervisor provides some level of clinical support.

The Child Life Supervisor is responsible for leading, coaching, mentoring, modeling best practices, scheduling, managing Paid Time Off (PTO) and day-to-day performance for direct reports. The position provides oversight of patient care and manages patient flow for Child Life at CHCO, and is responsible for ensuring the best patient care possible is provided by child life staff.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Child Life, Child Development, Counseling Psychology, Social Work, Education, or related fields.

  • Experience: Four (4) years previous experience in providing child life services in a healthcare setting.
  • Equivalency: Master or higher degree in a related field may substitute for the experience requirements on a year for year basis.
  • Certification(s ): Current Child Life Professional Certification (CCLS)

Essential Functions

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all the following essential functions. These examples do not include all the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.

  • Provides clinical expertise, leading department team members in providing developmentally appropriate care. Conducts needs assessments and monitors the progress, cooperation, and acceptance of services.
  • Supervises day-to-day activities of team members including, but not limited to, assigning and reviewing work, provides both on the job and formal training, and developing strong clinical team members.
  • Establishes performance metrics for department. Works with Child Life Leadership to achieve department outcomes, performance, and professional development standards; identifies opportunities for continual improvement to performance standards.
  • Facilitates clinical supervision with direct reports to encourage open communication and provide feedback; establishes team communication norms and staff rounding.
  • Maintains high level of professionalism in all communication with team members, faculty, and administration.
  • Interprets and explains regulatory standards and hospital policies, procedures, and rules to employees and ensures compliance with applicable quality and safety initiatives and practices.
  • Acts as a working supervisor to assist with patient and family interactions and facilitating care plans; remains available to provide clinical coverage as needed.
  • Resolves operational and patient/family issues, making decisions that are inclusive of multiple perspectives and solves underlying problems.
  • Selects, trains, develops, and evaluates department team members in collaboration with Child Life Manager. Creates a worker-friendly environment that develops and realizes the full potential of department team members. Serves as a champion of enterprise-wide culture, influencing culture change to support functional objectives. Monitors expenditures for unit/department and participates in the development of budget recommendations.
  • Participates in and leads internal and external departmental collaboration, community partnerships, and events with frontline staff.

SCOPE & LEVEL

Guidelines: Guidelines are in the form of stated objectives for the section, unit, function, or project. Is normally the first level of full supervision in a classification series. Performs most elements of supervision over 50% of the time. May also perform the work of front-line staff as needed.

Complexity: Work assignment is generally unstructured and team member is responsible for assigning and supervising a variety of functions to achieve the objectives of the section, unit, or project. Duties performed involve weighing and evaluating factors requiring judgment, analytical ability, and problem solving.

Decision Making: Team member is responsible for simultaneous coordination and supervision of several functions, programs, or projects in various stages of completion. Primary responsibility for arranging and directing the work of two or more employees.

Communications: Contacts are of a non-prescribed nature involving the negotiation and resolution of problems and where exceptional degrees of discretion, judgment, and specialized knowledge are required in carrying out the programs and policies of an organization.

Supervision Received: Under managerial direction, the employee has personal accountability for carrying out the work objectives of an organizational unit or section within the scope of established guidelines and the mission of the organization or department. Team member is expected to resolve problems that arise in the normal course of the work. Work may be discussed with higher level supervisors and reviewed for soundness of judgment and feasibility of decisions.

Salary Information

Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $68,066.41 to $102,099.61

Hourly Salary Range: $32.72 to $49.09
