I recently completed my first Crime Analysis project at GMU’s Fairfax Campus as part of my Intelligence Analysis course! By analyzing OSINT data from the GMU Police website covering the period from August to December 2023, I utilized techniques such as Link Analysis, Content/Thematic Analysis, and the ABC (Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence) model to uncover valuable insights into campus crime patterns, answer intelligence requirements 🔍, and propose mitigation strategies 🔐. What can the Irish poet, William Butler Yeats, teach us about OSINT, intelligence and analysis? It’s our job in OSINT to gather raw intelligence (chaos) and create succinct actionable points of fact through analysis (order). In college I wrote a thesis on The Vision. This metaphysical work by William Butler Yeats explores the esoteric concepts of life, death and meaning. One concept stuck with me that I have applied to many things in life — including OSINT. Yeats believed that when we are born we are faced with infinite possibilities. We have not yet defined ourselves or our limits in the world. Then, as we grow, we make more and more decisions. The more decisions we make — the more predestined our lives become. We have excluded and included certain paths and opportunities for ourselves based on our decision making. And while we can pivot at times, there comes a point where we cannot reverse some of our decisions. In the same way, we can’t un-do what we already experienced due to our decisions. I won’t go into Yeat's full version which reverses the cone after death, but I will say that this part of the concept applies nicely to what we do in OSINT. At the start of an investigation, we gather a lot of raw intelligence. It is a chaotic messy jumble of anything we can find that might be relevant to our intelligence question. Through analysis, we make more and more decisions on the meaning of this data. The more decisions we make along our investigative pathway — where to look, what else we need to know, what is fact vs fiction and why does it matter — the more predetermined our work product becomes. Predetermined in this case means those salient facts that we believe represent our investigative findings. We can learn a lot about life and OSINT from literature. Keep reading. Keep exploring.
