🗣  A huge shoutout to the team at Lexicon Pharmaceuticals, Inc. as they seek to improve the quality of life for patients fighting through a common side effect of diabetes - pain from nerve damage. ❓ Did you know that as many as 50% of patients with diabetes suffer nerve damage related to the disease? This condition - known as diabetic neuropathy - can mean 2 extreme realities: 😖  Increased pain in their feet, legs and hands that make navigating life more difficult. ❗  Less feeling makes it more likely that minor injuries in those extremities turn into severe infections with dire long-term results - including amputation. 🤞🏿  Lexicon’s PROGRESS study (currently in Phase 2b) is the next step as the team seeks approval for a new, non-opioid drug to treat this pain. An ounce of #prevention is worth a pound of cure. #GLP-1s rule the healthcare market now, and is predicted by some to be a $100B market by 2030, and is likely here to stay for the long haul given the multitude of health benefits associated with weight lost. But if we truly want to tackle #obesity, we need to start thinking about what we should do for patients after they’ve lost weight. How can they keep the weight off, especially since weight rebound seems to be a common phenomenon post GLP-1 discontinuation? More fundamentally, how do we prevent weight gain in the first place? There are many people in situations in which weight gain isn’t a simple case of "letting yourself go". How can we keep these people from gaining weight and developing comorbidities that can dramatically increase their mortality rate?
