Founded in 2015, California-based unspun™, provides 3D weaving technology eliminating waste and emissions and enabling circular production for the fashion sector, while lowering production costs. The company’s technology, Vega, weaves thousands of yarns into garments in minutes, which unspun said allows for almost zero-waste, on-demand, local manufacturing. According to unspun, the technology allows traditional cut-make-trim facilities to make clothing four times faster, with 53% emissions reduction, 49% reduced energy demand and a 39% reduction in blue water consumption. "For the consumer packaged goods sector, the aim of reuse is to significantly reduce the virgin materials being used. But an ineffective, poorly executed system can perpetuate the need for even more virgin materials by failing to recover reusables after they’ve been released onto the market. Reuse is about systems before packaging." Yes, thanks for this, Upstream. And the same could be said for recyclable packaging. A material that is hypothetically recyclable but doesn't have wide-spread systems in place (and/or a viable end market) shouldn't be called "recyclable." #packaging #CPG #reuse #recycle #sustainability #petrochemicals #plastic

🌍📈 Global Cotton Report: Paving the Way for Circular Textile Systems 📈🌍 In 2021, Accelerating Circularity, Inc. set out to address a critical challenge in the textile industry: how to transition from a linear to a circular system. They launched two groundbreaking system trials for cotton-based textile recycling, one in the United States and the other in Europe. TexCycle was among the 43 companies that participated in this ambitious project, covering every aspect of the textile supply chain—from collection and sorting to recycling (both mechanical and chemical), fiber blending, yarn spinning, knitting, weaving, manufacturing, and retail. These trials aimed to bridge gaps in circular textile research by bringing together diverse stakeholders to develop the necessary processes, relationships, and business models. Our collective efforts were guided by ambitious goals: achieving 20% postconsumer recycled content and 40% overall recycled content. Through this collaboration, we identified target materials and made significant strides in advancing circularity. The recent deliverable from this project is the Global Cotton Report, which highlights the achievements and sets a path forward for a more sustainable textile industry.
