Your team is exceeding expectations. How can you show appreciation for their hard work and dedication?
When I have a have performing person or team, I typically like to create new opportunities for them. This could be in the form of new responsibilities within the team or a new more advanced role. I also like to give them the opportunity to showcase their abilities to clients or to internal leadership.

What do you do if your organization is struggling to attract and retain top talent?
I read a book a while back called It’s My Pleasure. One of the big take aways for me was that most of us spend our time “selling” the organization to the recruits. But we need to be honest and give them reasons why they should consider not taking the job. By doing this, we are giving a true picture of the opportunities and struggles. If the recruit still takes the offer, they won’t be shocked by the challenges they face. It changes the way I recruit.

Your team is facing a big change. How can you help them adapt?
I have been in consulting for a very long time. The difference between success and failure lies in the change management strategies. Involving the team in the how is very important. One of the things that I try to encourage is allowing your leaders to come up with the how. We know where we are. We know where we want to be. How we get there should be something that the leaders are intimately involved in developing. I typically have the leader present the how. As long as I believe that it will 1. Get to the proper end point, 2. Not add extra expense or unnecessary delays and 3. Doesn’t create any compliance issues, I approve their how. I resist the temptation to tell them how. Their “how” may look different than mine. But buy-in is critical.

What are the most effective ways to transition your responsibilities to your successor?
From my perspective, you need to look for someone who not only shares the vision and goals, but brings with them the ability to adapt to the future that is unknown. Specifically, someone who brings new skillsets to the table so that they can continue to grow on that vision. We simply should not look for someone who shares the goals and vision, but someone who has the potential to exceeds ours.
