In March, the California Public Utilities Commission issued a major decision allowing renewable energy systems to be approved to interconnect to the electric grid by adhering to schedules that specify how much energy they send to the grid at different times. These schedules, called Limited Generation Profiles, will be designed to minimize a renewable energy project’s impacts on the electric grid, avoiding the need for costly infrastructure upgrades that might otherwise prevent a project from moving forward. IREC was one of the leading architects behind this policy, having laid the groundwork for this development over nearly a decade. We're excited to announce that EnergyHub has been awarded a grant by the California Energy Commission to expand the participation of distributed energy resources (DERs) in virtual power plants (VPPs) across California. The funding will help us enroll up to 7,000 new thermostats, EVs, EV chargers, and batteries in our platform with a focus on low- and moderate-income customers. Our partnership with Leap will allow us to bid these aggregated devices into CAISO, increasing the value of customer-owned DERs to the electricity system and providing a seamless experience for residents looking to enroll in the program. A recent October Report by the Berkeley Lab found that the U.S. added 18.5GW of utility-scale solar in 2023, an almost 25% increase for a nationwide total of 80GW. Costs dropped 8%, and solar projects delivered $1.1 billion in economic benefits. Solar projects are being done in new ways to maximize benefits—some projects are utilizing battery storage alongside the panels themselves, while others have been able to put the land to a dual-purpose alongside agriculture.
