You’re considering a career change. How can you leverage your existing skills to become an entrepreneur?
The best niches are found in the intersection of your skills, your passion, and your history. I call this your zone of alignment. To find this niche, I would recommend writing a list of the things you are most excited to talk about, a list of the skills you have that you love to use (not the skills that drain you), and a list of your experiences. Then combine different elements from those lists to figure out who you can help and how with your business. For example, I have a PhD in math, I create YouTube videos on time management and productivity for grad students, and I was a McNair scholar. Now, I help McNair scholars prepare for grad school. I do speaking gigs and run workshops and summer programs to help these students.

How can you use formative assessments to support active learning in a flipped classroom?
Alignment is so important in a flipped classroom. It should be clear to the students how their pre-class work is related their in-class work. And how their in-class work is related to their formative and summative assessments. For example, I give weekly written quizzes in my flipped precalculus class. The questions come concepts that are directly related to their pre-class and in-class assignments. And I “sell” the quizzes as a checkpoint to help the students understand which learning outcomes they have mastered and which learning outcomes they need more support in before taking the big test (summative assessment). I will often do an exercise where I ask the students to map their quiz questions back to the problems worked in class & before.

How can you avoid procrastination when working on projects with deadlines in Teaching?
Don’t check and respond to emails as soon as they enter your inbox. I find that checking my email 3 times a day is enough for me. I check it in the morning, during lunchtime, and before I leave the office for the day. Checking my email at this frequency requires a maximum of 30 minutes each session. Determine how many times you should check your email and avoid checking it during work sessions. For tasks that you find yourself avoiding, give yourself a finite to complete the task. For example, I schedule time to write letters of recommendation 30-45 minutes before a meeting. This helps me to avoid distractions because I know I need to finish the task in a short amount of time. The distraction is no longer worth my time.
