I recently had a candid conversation with Kate Syuma on the Growthmates Podcast, recorded live at the Hatch Conference in Berlin. I was thrilled to share thoughts on some of the biggest misconceptions about user research — especially for teams with limited resources. Let’s break down the 3 major myths we discussed: - Research is too costly and time-consuming. Many believe that good research requires a lot of time and money, but that’s simply not true. 👉 Advice: You don’t need a large budget or a dedicated research team to make an impact, just get started with what you have! - Research doesn’t provide measurable ROI. One of the most frequent concerns I hear is that research can’t be tied to business results. 👉 Advice: It CAN be done … it just takes a little extra effort. Understand what metrics YOUR company cares about (eg. cost reduction, retention rates), then get creative on doing the math to map your research outcomes in those terms. - Democratizing research is too risky. Some worry that letting non-researchers contribute might lead to inconsistent or inaccurate findings. 👉 Advice: Encourage teams to take ownership of customer experience insights and ensure leadership supports a culture of curiosity and continuous learning. How do design system teams prove their value? Finding hard metrics around the impact of design system teams has historically been a challenge. A year ago, I met the design system team at Eventbrite who could confidently say that they saved 534 days of engineering effort with their design system. Here's their calculation: Time spent to develop a component pre-design system - time spent to install the design system component = Time saved In order to extrapolate this number, though, you need to know how many times a component has been used. And, that used to require a savvy dev on the team to build something custom. That's no longer the case. We built something at zeroheight that will allow you to track component use in a single repo or across all of your repos. This should help teams show how valuable they are, plus do things like: see which components to prioritize based on use see which product teams are adopting As an added bonus, anyone using the new feature set can also monitor design system packages, allowing them to quickly see which teams are using outdated packages. On a personal note, I'm hoping with data like this, more teams can confidently quantify their impact. And along the way, we'll get better as design system practitioners at identifying the right things to work on. This new feature set is in beta and totally free. As a Product Manager… One of your most important relationships will be the one you share with your UX team… We as product managers often fall into the trap of viewing product solely through our own perspective… UX allows us (if not forces us) to view product through the lens of the user… UX toolkits and ceremonies provide us with an efficient and effective means to ensure we are meeting our users’ needs by providing us with critical user informed feedback loops that will ultimately serve to make our products more ‘correct’ and successful… #ProductManagement #FeedbackLoop #UserExperience

Claire Vo's Config keynote, "Hard Truths about the Future of Product Management," deeply resonated with me. I know multiple product leaders who went from leading big teams of PMs to being "Super IC PMs." 90% of them are much happier (and fulfilled) in their roles compared to when they were managing people. I also loved the slide below. Companies should consider incorporating some of the competencies into their career ladder. 👇
