Carbonara does not belong in a can… I love food innovation because I get to create experiences that create moments for consumers. I also love really good Italian food, particularly spaghetti carbonara. This doesn't appear to be either. Here’s how you avoid things like this when innovating. Ask yourself: Who am I trying to delight? What specific problem am I trying to solve? Can I solve that problem? Do I want to solve that problem? Can I make money solving that problem in a way that is authentic and delights my people? Ask yourselves these and be honest. Great ideas need great execution. When is it time for a brand to find a new home?... The potential sale of Oscar Mayer reflects a proactive approach to adapting to evolving consumer demands and market dynamics. Here are some thoughts that this WSJ article sparked in me. 1. Brands and companies at some point lose alignment. Brands can be very strong and consistently deliver a consumer promise. However, the brand promise may not be permanently in alignment with a company strategy. By prioritizing healthier product options and realigning its portfolio, Kraft Heinz shows a commitment to long-term growth. The focus on improving nutrition in its products reflects a broader industry trend towards addressing concerns over ultra-processed foods and health-related issues linked to diet. 2. The best decisions are grounded on the consumer. Kraft Heinz is considering selling Oscar Mayer to restructure its portfolio amidst growing consumer interest in health and nutrition. This move can help align with changing consumer preferences towards healthier options. 3. Stock performance and financial results matter. This strategic move is crucial for boosting the company's stock performance, which has been stagnant over the past five years. Kraft Heinz is facing challenges in its quarterly results due to cooling demand for some products and increased input prices. Profitable growth is about having the right portfolio for the long term. When brands lose alignment to the broader business strategy, they part ways with companies. In the end, it is about the consumer, what the consumer wants / expects and the competitive advantage of an organization to win with the consumer in a profitable way. LISTENING It's probably the MOST IMPORTANT skill a CPG supplier can have, especially if they are seeking to take their company to the next level of growth. Listen closely to buyers, uncover their pain points, and figure out how you can help them. If you listen closely, they will point the way. During my recent panel discussion with Jack Savdie of Global Beauty Care and Osman Mithavayani of Okay Pure Naturals at ECRM's recent Beauty Sessions, I asked them how they grew from small family businesses with a limited number of SKUs to the successful companies they are now with hundreds of SKUs on retail shelves. Both attributed their growth from spending time listening to buyers' needs. and finding ways to solve for them. When you do this over the course of many years and thousands of meetings which each of them have had during the 10+ years they have been attending ECRM Sessions), you get a good idea of where you should take your company. But it's not just the meetings; it's the hours they also spend building relationships outside of the meetings -- during the meals and networking functions at Sessions, phone conversations and office visits -- that also give them time to listen. Mekor Corporation is another example. While CEO Sapan N. wasn't on my panel, I interviewed him recently about how he grew his business 10X over the past decade. No surprise -- he said the same thing: He listened to buyers and learned what their needs were. And then he found a way to address them (see a link to my blog on Mekor in the comments). So sure -- when you meet with a buyer you need to spend time pitching your products; that goes without saying. But also spend some time listening. Learning.
