    In 2014, I founded a nonprofit organization, The Sumaira Foundation for NMO, dedicated to generating global awareness for neuromyelitis optica [NMO]. We offer a voice and empower the community via Voices of NMO™, fund innovative, groundbreaking research to find a cure through the SPARK and Unicorn grants, educate the medical community, and support patients and their caregivers.

    In 2014, I founded a nonprofit organization, The Sumaira Foundation for NMO, dedicated to generating global awareness for neuromyelitis optica [NMO]. We offer a voice and empower the community via Voices of NMO™, fund innovative, groundbreaking research to find a cure through the SPARK and Unicorn grants, educate the medical community, and support patients and their caregivers.

    Neuromyelitis optica [NMO] is a rare autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system. Incidence rate is 10 out of 1 million and 35% of patients are misdiagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Patients with NMO experience vision loss, paralysis, incontinence, and if not diagnosed/treated properly, fatality. Treatments include but are not limited to immunosuppressive therapy, plasma exchange, and steroids. The cause is unknown and currently, there is no cure.
