“Steven is a fantastic software engineer with a wide range of skills. He is kind, compassionate, and his technical knowledge is unbounded. He can easily whip up a script to automate a pain point in the company process, and is a natural technical leader and mentor. His communication skills are clear and concise, both written and oral, and he does not shy away from writing documentation! Pairing with Steven is always enjoyable and productive. He is able to get work done while making it fun and I learn something new every time.”

I spent a month in Namibia learning to take care of cheetahs, livestock guardian dogs, and goats for the local model farm. Along with these duties, I had opportunities to help various research projects and developed relevant, useful software that was needed.

This is where my profile picture is from.
The cheetah next to me is named Romeo. Cheetahs aren't pets and he's a prime example. Romeo was kept as a pet for most of his life until his owner could no longer take care of him. He will never be "wild" and now it's up to the Cheetah Conservation Fund to provide him a home for the rest of his life. -

Steven performed exceptionally high quality work while developing software to read and write large image files for the Integrated Software for Imagers and Spectrometers package. Steven overcame many obstacles while writing and integrating the software, including the optimization of caching algorithms used to minimize ultiple reads and writes of the same data and testing of over three hundred applications which use the new software.

Steven performed exceptionally high quality work and worked very well while writing, debugging and documenting ISIS software. He was particularly helpful in a coordinated effort to develop and improve the ceneteditor program, which allows for the interactive editing of control networks with millions of points. This software will be used in the creation of Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LROC) Narrow Angle Camera mosaics of the Moon that will be used to plan future robotic and human missions to the Moon.
Thank you, Steven for all your hard work! -

Steven took the lead role during the recent conversion of the Integrated Software for Imagers and Spectrometers (ISIS) software versioning system from the Concurrent Versions System (CVS) to Subversion. He oversaw the conversion itself, the modification of automated build scripts, the documentation and training of the programming staff. The overall results were high quality and met under tight deadlines.

Steven converted a large and complex system of computer algorithms designed to radiometrically calibrate data from the Cassini VIMS instrument to the Isis 3 environment. He was given over 5700 lines of code written in threee different languages and converted it to less than 600 lines of Isis 3 C++ code. His code is easily readable and maintainable by even junior members of the programming staff despite the large ratio of lines of code.

Steven implemented serveral major improvements to this Isis 3 application program interface (API) including a 50% decrease in processing time for finding image footprint overlaps between the images in a mosaic. He accomplished this while on a part time schedule with an extraordinary degree of professionalism and teamwork. He kept all involved parties well informed, made sound recommendations, and demonstrated a deep level of understanding for the Isis 3 API.

Researching and understanding new software development paradigms, and effectively applying them to planetary image processing, has well-positioned the Astrogeology team to support current and future NASA missions with ever increasing data volumes. Steven Lambright has diligently supported this effort by 1) designing and developing C++ base classes for planetary cartography, 2) establishing programming and documentation standards for ISIS3, 3) developing new ISIS3 applications, 4) converting ISIS2 applications, and 5) assisting the general user community. This award is in recognition of a job well done and the Astrogeology Team commends you for your fine efforts.
