It's pointless to set monthly financial targets if you don't have quarterly goals. And you can't have useful quarterly goals without annual goals. So my question to the DTC brands out there is - have you created an annual plan? If not, you shouldn't be creating a monthly plan. Why? Because a plan that ladders up to nothing leads to nowhere. If you want to scale your DTC brand to $50m+ in annual revenue, then you probably need to expand into physical retail at some point... Why? Most product categories don't have enough TAM online to support a $50m+ brand. There are some exceptions, but as Ryan Rouse always reminds me, plan on being the rule, not the exception. And the rule is that most DTC brands should plan on being <$50m without expanding into retail. In fact, some DTC brands should expect to be significantly smaller than $50m depending on their product category. Is this a bad thing? Not at all. There are some incredible $15m-$20m DTC brands that crush it in their niche. The size you want to grow your brand to comes back to what your goals are. So before you decide that you want to scale your DTC brand to $50m+, make sure that outcome aligns with your goals. And if you decide it does, then you better get learning about what it takes to expand into physical retail, because you're going to need it. -- Find this post helpful?
