Harvestone Low Carbon Partners (HLCP) has successfully raised $205 million from Bank of America for its Blue Flint Ethanol LLC related #carboncapture project. The first-of-its kind tax equity financing was successful primarily because HLCP controlled the entire North Dakota #CCS value chain: capture, transport and sequestration. The project is on target to capture and store over 200,000 tonnes of #CO2 annually. Looks like even with the Matterhorn open, the pipeline we were told would fix the pricing problem at Waha, the pricing problem remains. There are a few points in this article I also disagree with. "Now, what this will likely do is spur on more natural gas production in the Permian – potentially oil production, too, because oil has also been under the effects of this excess natural gas in the region, because there’s a limit to how much natural gas can be flared." Ha! A limit to how much natural gas can be flared? In Texas. I don't think so. About those Permian gas prices: "With the production, the price in Permian – the Waha – there is negative. And so we are going to see a gradual increase, but nothing too crazy, because it’s just really relieving this bottleneck more than anything else." A gradual increase from negative pricing means they will still vent and flare the methane instead of paying to have it taken away. And the last point is if someone says this, when they are talking about energy markets in TX, they clearly don't understand the current energy market or are lying. "So going forward, demand continues to grow in Texas. There’s a lot of solar capacity being added, but to meet this higher demand, you’re going to need natural gas to continue to be that base load fuel – the most reliable one, whether the sun may not be shining or the wind isn’t blowing." Solar, wind plus storage is a money maker in TX. Storage is the fossil fuel killer. Now if we want to talk about energy being unreliable due to weather, have you heard about how nat gas does in extreme heat or cold? Not great. In summary, there is a new pipeline in TX. There are several reasons why this transition may face significant hurdles: * - Long-Distance Limitations: EVs, especially pickups with a light load, struggle with long-distance travel. * - Infrastructure Issues: There's a noticeable lack of charging stations. * - Safety Concerns: EVs have been known to spontaneously catch fire. * - Insurance Challenges: Insurance companies are either canceling policies or significantly raising rates. * - Maintenance Problems: EVs cause accelerated wear on tires and brakes. Additionally, even when the government subsidizes EV manufacturers to develop their products and provides incentives for the wealthiest to purchase them, these companies are still facing financial difficulties. I recently wrote a series of blog posts about the voluntary carbon market (VCM). Below is a snapshot from the third post. The Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) is at a crossroads. Should a company be more specific about the sources of CO2 emissions? 🤔 Summit Carbon Solution's proposed project would transport CO2 captured from corn fermentation, while the CO2 emitted from gas-powered industrial equipment would still go into the atmosphere. Probably, no surprise here. But it's curious that the details have surfaced only three years after the initial project announcement. Indeed, it's hard to find an article that would specifically mention CO2 emissions from corn fermentation in the context of the Midwest Carbon Express pipeline. I did find an article in the Ohio Country Journal from August 2021 discussing the proposed pipeline and emissions from corn fermentation, but your really need to know what you're looking for to get this far. Even the project presentation, submitted to the Iowa Utilities Board by Summit in September 2021, doesn't contain the word "fermentation" (Docket HLP-2021-0001). According to this article 👇 , the 57 ethanol plants partnering with Summit could still emit about 7 million metric tons of CO2 per year from gas-powered processes. Meanwhile, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) does not report CO2 emissions from corn fermentation, and Summit hasn't disclosed the estimates of fermentation emissions of its partnering ethanol plants. Based on rough estimates, the amount could range between 5 and 16 million metric tons annually, well within the pipeline's capacity of 18 million tons. However, the lower-end estimate would mean significant underutilization of the pipe. Some of the project's opponents could make greenwashing allegations based on this information, potentially creating a new battleline for Summit, but likely more on the PR side.
