Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois is expanding its Special Beginnings® program to tackle maternal and infant health challenges in the state. The program targets underserved and rural communities with limited access to quality care. It focuses on: - Improved birthing facilities: Promoting better quality and health equity in birthing locations across Illinois. - Community resources: Providing resources to community-based organizations addressing social determinants of health. These factors significantly impact health outcomes but lie outside the traditional healthcare system (e.g., access to healthy food, safe housing). - Workforce expansion: Supporting the growth of the maternal health workforce, including doulas and midwives, to address perinatal disparities (differences in birth outcomes between different populations). - Supporting women and families throughout their journey: Special Beginnings offers support before, during, and after pregnancy, focusing on areas identified as maternity care deserts in the latest state Maternal Morbidity and Mortality Report. I'm impressed by this energy, Missouri! This is a #proactive approach to improving maternal and infant health outcomes. The state Department of Social Services announced that #doula services for low-income women will now be reimbursed through MO HealthNet, the state’s Medicaid program. “DSS finds an immediate danger to the public health, safety or welfare of pregnant women in Missouri, which requires this emergency action,” Monday’s emergency rule stated." This initiative signals a commitment to addressing public health concerns for pregnant women and birthing people in Missouri with access to community-based perinatal support.
