Ornish program vs Alzheimer's study now out: https://lnkd.in/dYPxhWr7 Summary: A lot like their prev CVD study: Small n (~50). Stat sig benefits vs ctrl w/ (not-stat-sig) trend of reversal of age-related worsening on some metrics, of cognition. Despite small n, an important study for the 2 broader pictures it fits into: (a) the overall pattern of data that lifestyle affects rate of neurodegeneration & (b) the data that this program (low-fat WFPB diet + exercise + meditation + social support) helps vs a variety of age-related diseases (CVD, AD, prost cancer, T2D) & molecular pathologies (telomere shortening, BP, cholesterol). On latter see my post: https://lnkd.in/gc33T-wN More on (a) but 1st a few details: Like CVD study, subjects had disease progression, AD here, based on cognition tests & biomarkers (Aβ42/40). This time, program relaxed fat restriction. CVD study: 10% target, 8.5% achieved. New study: 14-18%. Big diff. ~2x. Diverges f/ Esselystn (<=10%) & Okinawan (6%) diets. While small, this is current best RCT data on lifestyle & dementias, thus a big contribution. Hard to do big lifestyle dementia trials. We must triangulate diverse data but there's a lot: - association studies, w/ corrections for confounders: many support the lifestyle mods here (prob enough to satisfy Hill's causality criteria), - intervention studies for elements of this program: many, some cited here; eg similar but not identical MIND diet has shown some cog benefit - interventional trials of other similar multimodal programs, eg https://lnkd.in/d-VwkDJv & FINGER trial If this were a new area or drug n=50 would just be hypothesis-generating & justify bigger study, but need to apply diff analysis due to above context & impracticality of funding big ph3-equiv trial, esp given the importance of the scientific questions at stake here. Each of the studies comprising the bullets above & this new study have notable limitations when considered individually, but it would be a scientific mistake to consider each in isolation as insufficient evidence & round down to zero data value for each one then sum the zeros to assume there's no useful data on whether lifestyle can delay neurodegeneration. There are many people suffering & likely to be diagnosed in coming years & a paucity of good therapeutic options for them. To pretend the totality of data isn't actionable and all those people must wait for more data is silly. It's also now clearly wrong to claim that diagnostics for dementias or dementia risk are useless because there is nothing the patient can do. Clearly there are things people can do that totality of evidence strongly suggests will have benefits & whose side effects to the extent there are any are just also beneficial (delaying other age-related diseases & pathologies).

We must reverse this decision before it is too late.” “There are so many misstatements and flawed analyses in the 110-page notice of April 19, 2024, in the Federal Register that it is hard to know where to begin. But here are some key extracts:” “DOE believes at this time that circadian-friendly integrated LED lamps do not possess unique attributes compared to other (GSLs).” (i.e. light bulbs, which they refer to as general service lamps). (p. 28877) This is nonsense. Circadian-friendly light bulbs have distinct spectral power distributions—i.e., the relative amounts of light at each color wavelength. Circadian-friendly lights are rich in 480 nm blue during the day and emit minimal 480 nm blue in the evenings and at night.
