In early June 2024, I had the pleasure of participating in a fireside chat with Amy Rotman during the 121 Mining and Investor Summit. We talked about Nucleation Capital and our thesis revolving around the importance of nuclear energy as a tool in the energy transition. I described some of the new technologies being developed or refined to make nuclear systems that are able to serve the needs of a much larger customer base than the one served by monopoly electric utility companies that wanted huge central station power plants. Industrial heat and electricity production on a smaller scale are driving forces leading developers to configurations that allow higher operating temperatures at lower pressures. We also talked about the business model innovations being pursued, including the idea of companies that build, own and operate fleets of nuclear reactors while selling heat and power under long term power purchase agreements. https://lnkd.in/ecg-grGx

Lazard's annual report on the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) reveals that utility-scale solar and onshore wind are now the cheapest sources of new electricity generation, with utility-scale solar costing $29 to $92 per MWh and onshore wind costing $27 to $73 per MWh. This marks a significant decline from previous years, especially for solar, which has seen an 83% drop in costs since 2009. The report highlights that the cheapest fossil fuel generation source, coal, has an LCOE of $69 to $169 per MWh, making it nearly double the cost of utility-scale solar on average. Natural gas peaker plants and nuclear energy have even higher costs, with natural gas ranging from $110 to $228 per MWh and nuclear averaging $182 per MWh. Despite cost pressures such as high interest rates, the overall LCOE for renewable technologies remains stable. Smaller-scale distributed solar projects also saw cost reductions, though they remain more expensive than utility-scale projects, with residential solar ranging from $122 to $284 per MWh. The report also underscores the additional benefits of renewable energy, including significant climate and health benefits, and the reduced need for long-distance transmission infrastructure with distributed solar projects. Furthermore, the Inflation Reduction Act has positively impacted the costs of renewable energy and energy storage, further reducing the LCOE for these technologies. #Ørsted Energy developer Ørsted announced that it has received a $680 million investment in tax equity financing from J.P. Morgan, aimed at funding the construction of new solar and storage projects in Texas and Arizona. According to Ørsted, the investment marks one of the largest solar and storage tax equity transactions using a combined production tax credit (PTC) and investment tax credit (ITC) structure since the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Signed into law by President Biden in 2022, the IRA allocated nearly $370 billion through a series of tax credits, loans, grants and subsidies to areas including renewable energy and industrial decarbonization solutions, and for the first time made these tax credits transferable, creating a new mechanism for funding energy transition projects. https://lnkd.in/dc6j5SEe
