If you want to be effective as a speaker and communicator, videoing yourself is the quickest and easiest way to gain ‘audience perspective’ of how you are being perceived by your audience. Watch yourself and then begin working on the body language basics. If you can get your stance right, your hands in a good neutral position, eye contact with a smile, and moving with purpose, then you will look like a natural even if it doesn’t feel right at first. Watch professionals on TV for examples and then experiment. You can decide for yourself what you think suits you. Get some third party advice from someone who knows if you can, and then cement those habits! Never stop studying yourself and you’ll keep getting better and better.

When I worked in the Financial Sector in the UK, Tracy was my 'right hand woman' .. we used to joke that she was the acceptable 'face of the division'! She had a simple saying that she lived by - 'you can sort anything out with a chat!' If possible, she would go see you in person, sit down and start by apologizing for the mixup and then listen to EVERYTHING you had to say. She was hardly ever at her desk because she was always visiting someone. If you were at one of our remote sites, she would call you. EVERYONE loved Tracy. Email is a great but so easy to misread - especially when you're busy. I love Kelly's comment below - PICKUP THE PHONE! I'd just add to that, if you can, go see them in person. You can sort anything out with a chat!

Most of what we do is habitual. Habits are things that we do without thinking. If our habits are not helping us communicate effectively, we've got to amend those habits. All our bad habits are obvious to other people, they can see it clearly. But we can't. So either get a coach to help you uncover the things that are holding you back when you speak, or video yourself and see for yourself! Video is such a great tool because you can become aware of what the audience sees and hears! Hand movements, stance, facial expressions, eye contact, smiling, shrugging, gesturing, posture, gait etc. etc. all become obvious when you see yourself as they see you. Body language is a big part of effective communication. Well worth spending time on.
