How can you make your budget and forecasting tools more accurate?
I miss the days of basic plan flips and pre-work meetings. There is so much value in getting physically together with talented and conscientious partners and team mates who have done their “homework” to go over a project and what they have found. People have gotten so meeting averse that we have thrown the good out with the bad. Or, when we do meet, it's a discovery meeting for all involved as nobody has dug in to the documents before hand.

What are the best ways to ensure your schedule is realistic when planning and scheduling?
If you have subcontractors, suppliers, 3rd party designers and other vendors involved in the project, you MUST get their input! Somehow we lost this step in the construction industry and far too many PMs and Supers take the attitude of “we are the GC, you conform to our schedule!” and then wonder why the partners fail. Get production rates, use those in your schedule, and review the final schedule with the partners to get buy in. There is a much higher probability of success that way AND should the partner fail or struggle later on you can remind them that this was “their” schedule and rates to begin with! This often helps to get them to catch up!
