Big news in the effort to abolish the ASWB exam! The ASWB examination is a white supremacist project which we social workers should fight to abolish. The ASWB exam does not protect the public and serves to maintain barriers to enter the social work profession for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. In February of 2024 I was appointed to the Oregon Board of Licensed Social Workers. In May of 2024, I was named chair of the Alternative Pathways to Social Work Licensure. And just this past weekend, we submitted our recommendations to the board: abolish the use of the ASWB exam for all social work licensing and certification. The next steps are for the board to read, discuss, and vote on the recommendations. If you would like to attend the next board meeting to comment, there is a public session available via zoom this Friday. As always, nothing I say here represents any official position of the Oregon Board of Licensed Social Workers. But it’s very possible that through our collective efforts and by the end of the year, Oregon will be the first state to abolish the ASWB exam!
