Helping alcoholics becomes personal issue - Former Hampton councilman supports foundation for treatment July 25, 2010 - Daily Press HAMPTON — Randy Gilliland describes his father as the strongest person he has ever met. But behind the image of a successful small-businessman who rose from humble roots was a man losing a long battle against alcoholism. Mickey Gilliland shot himself dead in 1995. A few years earlier, his sister Vivian, who was also an alcoholic, had killed herself with a gun in her Florida home. Since deciding to leave the Hampton City Council, he has held a fundraiser for Mickey's House and Vivian's House, a property that provides aftercare for recovering alcoholics to help smooth the transition between treatment and returning to society. Gilliland said Friday his father successfully kept his alcohol addiction hidden. "When you're younger you don't really notice. My father was actually a remarkably functioning alcoholic," he said. "He was at work at 5:30 in the morning and would open the company every day. … He was a tough, gritty kind of guy." At the age of 58 he unexpectedly took his own life in October 2005. The death hit Gilliland hard. "I spent five year in a fog. My father was a small-business guy, and, like every other small-business guy, everything my family owned was wrapped up in that business" he said. He took over running the business for four years until it was sold. "Given the genetic markers I have, there was a time to make a decision whether to manage your drinking or not to drink, and I'm not drinking now," he said. Gilliland set up Mickey's House and Vivian's House in a three-bedroom house in July 2009 at an undisclosed location. Six recovering alcoholics have so far used the service. Gilliland said he became aware there was a gap in the system because people were being released from treatment centers onto the streets where they were often left unsupported and without any money.

The Peninsula Housing & Builders Association acts as the voice of its members on issues that affect the housing and building industry. It works to protect economic growth and strives to keep housing affordable. Through its public and legislative efforts, it helps to educate the public and keep the building industry thriving. Housing is vital to local and state economies, creating jobs and generating taxes and wages that positively influence the quality of life. Not only do these effects begin before the shovel even hits the dirt, but they last long after the housing has been built. PHBA works to protect the interests and vitality of the Hampton Roads building industry because a vibrant home-building industry translates into massive benefits. PHBA supports and promotes “Smart Growth” policies. These policies address how to best plan for and manage when and where new residential and commercial development, schools and major highways should be built, how and where to preserve meaningful open space and protect environmentally sensitive areas, and how to pay for the infrastructure required to serve a growing population. When used properly as a planning tool, Smart Growth can help expand homeownership opportunities and allow Americans to obtain the home and lifestyle of their dreams in new neighborhoods, older communities and city infill markets. PHBA works with locally elected governments to balance competing interests and assure the realities of the housing marketplace are a part of local decision-making. PHBA encourages decisions based on direct citizen input that best reflect the needs, desires, and priorities of our communities.

Hampton Roads Green Drinks is the umbrella group for the 5 Green Drinks events in Hampton Roads--Peninsula, Williamsburg, Chesapeake, Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Once a month, people around the world get together at informal gatherings known as "Green Drinks." These events are a great place to mingle and network with people who are interested in environmental issues. Green Drinks is laid-back and unstructured, so stop by and bring a friend! Hampton Roads has 5 different chapters of Green Drinks, but we all work together to help green people in the region connect with one another. The chapters are Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Williamsburg, Chesapeake, and the Peninsula (Hampton). We founded the Peninsula Chapter in March 2009. Since then we have seen amazing growth due to a wonderful response from the community. Each month with have an engaging speaker and an enthusiastic crowd. This is THE information sharing and networking event for anyone employed, studying, or simply interested in environmental/green issues, work, or jobs on the Virgina Peninsula! Every month people who work in the environmental field meet up at informal sessions known as Green Drinks. We have a lively mixture of people from NGOs, academia, government and business. Come along and you'll be made welcome. Just say, "are you green?" and we will look after you and introduce you to whoever is there. It's a great way of catching up with people you know and also for making new contacts. Everyone invites someone else along, so there’s always a different crowd, making Green Drinks an organic, self-organizing network. These events are very simple and unstructured, but many people have found employment, made friends, developed new ideas, done deals and had moments of serendipity. It's a force for the good and we'd like to help it spread to other cities.

Another unique opportunity arose when the building adjacent to the Theatre became available. With the assistance of The City of Hampton and The Commonwealth of Virginia, the Hampton Arts Foundation purchased the 1939 building and completed an ambitious $4 million campaign — The Century Campaign — to incorporate the building into The American Theatre. It created a unique educational wing and added stage and production space.
