Here's how you can present yourself as a valuable candidate and overcome the stigma associated with a layoff.
Whether discussing a layoff or time out of the workforce for any reason, highlight for the potential employer the personal and professional development work you have been doing during this time period. For example, what formal learning have you invested in (e.g., online courses, credentials, certificates, books read, etc.)? Demonstrating investment in self even during a time period off work exemplifies focus and drive. Also, what are your “Points of Difference” (PODs)? What experiences, skills, and character traits set you apart from others? Truly knowing yourself and being able to articulate those PODs in a positive way that highlights your unique value can raise your profile in a job search situation.

What role should student feedback play in shaping educational reform?
At our core, educational institutions exist to serve students. I meet with our students regularly to seek their feedback and learn of their lived experiences so we can plan and execute our work accordingly, in the best interest of those we serve.

How can lifelong learning help you adapt to changing Higher Education demands?
Lifelong learning is best done with a sense of curiosity and delight. Formal education is certainly one possible pathway to learning, but our passions and interest can also guide us. Additionally, our preferences for learning can play a key role. Are you a visual learner? Auditory? Do you learn best through doing? Or collaborating? To grow yourself, it is vital to know yourself.

How can lifelong learning help you adapt to changing Higher Education demands?
Higher education is, essentially, about personal and professional development, which is and should be a lifelong journey. Faculty invest a great deal their respective discipline(s) and, for a time, are masters therein. Change is ever-present, however, and we must remain vigilant to ensure mastery doesn’t lead to complacency, which can cause masters to fall out of mastery. Constant curiosity and delight in learning are key to avoid this potential pitfall. The positive news is that, as masters of a particular discipline, that path has been successfully navigated in the past and can be successfully navigated in the future and, will in fact, most assuredly need to be navigated in the future to stay abreast of changes.
