❓Did you know… #GenZ, the current rabble rousers and protestors, are potentially the most influential voting group this election season? According to researchers at Tufts, in the upcoming presidential election, 40.8 million members of Gen Z (ages 18-27 in 2024) will be eligible to vote, including 8.3 million newly eligible youth (ages 18-19 in 2024) who will have aged into the electorate since the 2022 midterm election. The challenge is getting them to vote, especially the newly eligible and youth of color voters, as they vote at lower rates. Call to Action: Support and empower #GenZ. Help them understand that their opinions matter and votes count. Help them register and go vote. Along with partners at Carnegie, I have a piece out in Foreign Affairs this morning. The argument is simple: 1. 80% of IRA-funded battery production will be in Republican districts. 2. This will create bipartisan consensus for scaling transition minerals supply chains. 3. The US needs to use foreign policy strategically to make this happen. We are already seeing signs that Republicans are on board. - Congressional reps are lining up behind their factories. Rep. Andy Biggs, who is a member of the House Freedom Caucus, touted the announcement of a 53 GWh LG facility in his district. - When Republicans signaled they would repeal the IRA in June 2023 maneuvers, they spared the battery incentives. On the foreign policy side, the challenge is steep, but doable. - The US needs to mobilize $300billion. Its allies will have to make further contributions at least at that scale. - The US and allies also need to think creatively about price insurance and strategic reserves.
