Some insights here from Paul Morville, Parrot AI customer and AI evangelist Sam Wheatley, and AI marketing innovator Angela Pitter on the “AI Demystified” panel at Startup Week Boston. #SBW2024 Paul: “Meetings are the richest source of the current state and understanding of your business.” Once you have all your meetings recorded, businessses then need to use AI to “leverage all of it to communicate better,” generating analysis, marketing content, you name it. It’s also a phenomenally efficient way to onboard new employees! Sam: if you use AI as your assistant bot and “institutional knowledge holder,” it then becomes indispensable for rapid content creation. It has also made Avail NYC much more effective in reaching its target audience. Specifically they have leveraged “interact-able data” to test marketing messaging. With AI-enabled persona marketing they went from 60k site visitors to now 600K! Angela: recommends taking a step back first and think about what problems you want AI to help solve. Look at your workflows and examine the tools you’re already using and see what AI enhancements they’ve added. And when testing out new AI tools, make sure they offer free trial to test them out.

Everyone keeps wondering why the average CMO tenure keeps getting shorter. I believe, at the heart of it, there's a communication gap. Marketing has become more complex. But a big part of our job is to provide clarity. When marketers start using jargon and acronyms, it can sound to board members and other C-level execs like they are speaking a foreign language. Likewise, marketing leaders often fail to link their work back to core financial metrics, or to go the extra mile to explain clearly how their efforts (and budget) impact revenue. Fortunately, there's a lot we can do to remedy this.
