Why need DFMA (DFM + DFA)? See below picture to find the gap between different stage if without good DFMA. We'd better to involve manufacturing team during the concept design stage to review the DFMA about Manufacturing & Assembly concerns, then optimize the design to be more manufacturable. DFM is related to different manufacturing process. Just keep in mind, every manufacturing process has its limitation. You need to check with process manufacturing / tool designers in details. About DFA, the basic guideline is as below: 1. Reduce the components Qty, 2. Reduce the Kinds and Qty's of hardware components (screws, washers, etc.) 3. Our new Director of Quality, Michael Mitchell, recently shared some key takeaways from a presentation by Rockwell Automation at the Ohio Valley Surface Mount Technology Association (SMTA) Expo & Tech Forum. The focus was on a critical issue: tombstoning during the soldering process. Tombstoning occurs when small components like capacitors lift off PCB pads during reflow soldering, resembling a "tombstone." This can lead to significant quality issues in electronic assemblies. Key contributing factors include: - Reflow process: The way a board is heated during reflow is crucial. Uneven heating can cause one side of a component to reflow before the other, leading to tombstoning. - Temperature ramp rates: Rockwell emphasized the importance of controlled temperature ramping to achieve uniform soldering. For most products, a rate of around 1°C per second is effective, with more complex assemblies requiring even slower rates. Improvements: - Solder paste revision: Switching to a new solder paste with better properties to reduce tombstoning. - Process adjustments: Revising ramp times and temperatures to ensure consistent, high-quality soldering.
