I spent a part of the last weekend talking to some PM aspirants and conducting a few mock interviews. Several folks are worried about what to read and how to prep for PM interviews. Every day there seems to be a new question and a new framework on the internet - it can be tough to play catch up. IMHO, you need only the below resources to crack 99.9% of the toughest PM interviews. The rest 0.1% can sometimes be influenced by factors outside of your control and even Dettol does well to not worry too much about that. #productmanagement #productmanagementinterviews

In my current read, I've come across a powerful concept that resonates deeply with the challenges product managers often face. Junior and associate product managers often step into the role eager to make an impact, yet the journey from simply executing tasks to leading with purpose involves learning to think strategically. In the beginning, it can feel natural to focus on completing to-dos, but real growth comes when you observe how senior PMs link each action to a larger vision. Watching a mentor think long-term teaches that a successful PM considers not just immediate needs but also the lasting effects of today’s choices. Shifting from a task-based approach to one that envisions outcomes is essential in becoming a product manager who doesn’t just support strategy but shapes it. One of the most crucial parts of this growth is learning to understand and apply customer insights effectively. Gathering feedback is only the first step; transforming those insights into thoughtful priorities that balance user needs, business goals, and feasibility is where true impact lies. Shadowing a senior PM as they conduct customer interviews or shape a roadmap reveals how to translate insights into direction. This process involves empathy, understanding, and a curiosity about users that often distinguishes product managers who drive meaningful change from those who simply follow a checklist. Perhaps the most valuable lesson a junior PM can take from a mentor is learning how to lead without relying on authority. The best PMs know that influence is earned through alignment, clear communication, and trust rather than any formal title. Watching senior colleagues rally teams, earn buy-in, and motivate stakeholders without dictating terms offers insight into a crucial skill. Navigating cross-functional teams with ease, especially amid ambiguity, is one of a PM’s most powerful assets. As a Product Manager, the most important team member to collaborate with IS NOT your boss. It is also not the Engineering Team Lead or Design Team Lead. Often overlooked, the go-to team member for frequent interactions and collaboration is the Customer Success Manager, i.e., the Customer Service Team. A major reason you're a Product Manager on a technical team is to be the Voice of the Customer. Create more time to interact with the platform customers, users, and the teams that manage them. In many situations, we are distracted by feature requests and suggestions from other stakeholders and not the customers. Collaborations with internal stakeholders, Product Owners, and the Engineering team are great and should be upheld. However, having the backlog clogged by their source requests will mostly end up in building solutions that don't cover the actual customers' needs. Your role is to add technologies that improve their current frustrations and pain points. You also make projections for processes that will make customer interaction with the platform faster, easier, or both. Why Being a PM vs. TPM Feels Like Choosing Between Batman and Iron Man . . . Ever wondered what it's like to be the mastermind behind the next groundbreaking electronic product? Well, both roles are superheroes in their own right but with very distinct missions. As a #ProductManager You're the visionary, the Bruce Wayne of your company. You're all about the "what" and "why" #What product are we building? #Why does this product matter to our customers and our business? You're the person everyone looks to when they ask, "What's next?" ➡ You gather customer insights ➡Analyze market trends ➡Define the product roadmap. You’re essentially the one making sure we’re building the right Batmobile that customers need, and it’s packed with all the right gadgets. Being a #TechnicalProgramManager You’re channeling your inner Tony Stark. Your focus is on the "how" and "when" #How will we build this product? #When will it be ready for launch? You’re the genius behind the curtain, orchestrating the symphony of design, development, and production. You ensure that the engineering team has everything they need to turn blueprints into reality, much like how Stark Industries turns ideas into cutting-edge tech (hopefully without the exploding suits). ...... So, what’s the real difference? Imagine the #PM saying, "We need to build a new smart speaker because our customers want better sound quality and seamless integration with their smart home devices." Meanwhile, the #TPM is in the lab, coordinating the team to ensure this speaker hits the market on time, with every feature working flawlessly.
