Still no resolution in relation to the US strike with a shut-down now only 3½ days away. USMX has filed an Unfair Labor Practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and requested immediate injunctive relief – requiring the Union to resume bargaining. The ILA union calls the USMX’s filing a weak publicity campaign says that it is the foreign shipping companies exploiting American longshoremen which is the unfair labour practice. Adding further complications, the dockworkers in Montreal might now also go on strike from October 1st with workers having overwhelmingly voted in favour of a strike if the current negotiations are not concluded successfully. Operational disruptions are continuing as carriers prepare for a shut down. ONE’s latest overview now shows 11 services into USEC where vessels will omit certain ports and instead discharge all cargo in alternate USEC ports in order to avoid getting the vessels trapped in a strike. This adds pressure to shippers who now only need to gate their cargo out rapidly during the weekend and Monday before the strike, but at the same time also need to pick the cargo up in ports which were not part of their original route planning. See details in below link. Drewry’s WCI spotrates showed continued declines. Asia-N.Eur down 525 USD/TEU and Asia-Med down a little more than 700 USD/TEU from last week. Both trades still being above the level in end-April before the peak season though. On the Pacific USWC was down slightly only some 90 USD/TEU and USEC was down a bit more than 300 USD/TEU. Also in this case rates remain above pre-peak levels with USWC still being 2000 USD/TEU higher and USEC being 1700 USD/TEU higher. Sea-Intelligence released data for carrier reliability in August. In essence the performance was unchanged as marginally more than half of the vessels were on time, and the delayed vessels saw the average delay still hover at slightly more than 5 days. Throughout 2024 the ontime performance has hovered in the 51%-56% range. ONE has advised a congestion surcharge for cargo from all origins into USEC and USGC of 1000 USD/TEU applicable from October 26th. In South America, Maersk has announced an 800 USD/TEU PSS to and from West Coast South America for all cargo to and from other regions in the Americas. All remains quiet in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, now on the 25th day without any reported attacks on merchant vessels. 📢 Hot off the press is our report on assessing whether #biofuels degrade under commercial maritime storage and handling conditions.   https://lnkd.in/gH7z88Jf   #FAME is increasingly deployed by shipowners and operators as a drop-in fuel to reduce GHG emissions.📉   This “drop-in” character makes FAME a particularly attractive alternative fuel; its compatibility with fossil fuel means we can leverage existing #bunkering infrastructure, marine engines and shipboard fuel systems.🚢   🤷🏻‍♀️ Cost and availability aside, why – then – are shipowners and operators hesitant to blend biofuels with conventional fuels? Why are they urged to increase the maintenance frequency of engine and fuel delivery systems?   As much as FAME is touted to be compatible with conventional marine fuels, FAME is chemically distinct.🙅🏻‍♀️   Conventional marine fuels consist of paraffins, aromatics and asphaltenes. In chemistry speak, lots of C-C and C-H bonds.   FAME comprises of a mixture of fatty acid methyl esters. So lots more hydroxyl and carbonyl groups.🧪   This means FAME is more prone to free radical attacks and oxidation.   It means FAME is more hygroscopic, and in the presence of water, FAME can more easily degrade.💦   It also means FAME is more conducive to microbial growth.🦠   It’s therefore not surprising to see laboratory-based experiments confirming FAME degradation when large quantities of water is added (as high as 12.5%), or when FAME is intentionally exposed to air and light💡in the absence of antioxidants and biocides, or when FAME is stored at elevated temperatures.🌡️   Testing under such exaggerated conditions has allowed us to better understand the mechanisms by which FAME degrades.🗓️   But commercial operational conditions these are NOT.   FAME storage tanks and delivery systems are enclosed to minimise exposure to air and light.   Fuel standards mandate a moisture content <0.5%. In fact, fuels typically undergo gravitation separation aboard vessels so their moisture content is below 0.2-0.3% prior to combustion.   Antioxidants and biocides are also typically added to enhance stability and prevent microbial attack.       We tested FAME at different sampling points along two #supplychains⛓️ from its production facility to its consumption onboard vessels over 5 months. FAME was blended on a commercial basis and stored and handled under business-as-usual conditions.💵   ‼️Our chemical analyses indicate NO significant degradation of FAME under standard operations conditions.‼️   These findings offer encouraging evidence for FAME use in the marine fuels supply chain.   Beyond FAME stability, Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) and NYK Line launched Project LOTUS to quantify the impact of long-term use of biofuels on engines and fuel delivery systems. With its first biofuels bunkering completed last week, we look forward to sharing complementary insights at the pilot’s completion.😊 Together, we are stronger; together we can💪
