Last week, the 2024 NFL Draft took place in Detroit with a total attendance of more than 700,000 fans. 🏈 "What is the NFL Draft and why does it matter?" is what several people asked me, especially from outside of the USA. Plenty has been written about it but here is my short perspective. The NFL Draft is a crucial event for the 32 NFL clubs and the future of their teams. It is an annual event during which new players are recruited (‘picked’) to each team from colleges and universities. With seven rounds of picks, each club generally gets to go once in each round. The order of the picks is determined by the club's performance during the previous season - in reverse order - worst teams get to pick first. This ensures that no single team consistently dominates the competition long-term, making it one of the most parity-filled American sports leagues. The draft has had a considerable impact on the league and clubs, allowing small-market teams to compete with larger-market ones and helping to level the playing field in terms of talent distribution throughout the league. Other elements aimed to create healthy competition include salary caps (each club gets to spend same amount of money on players), balanced game schedules (better teams play better teams), equitable access to equipment (all tech is available to both teams in a game), as well as the Draft. Next Friday we are back with a new Locker Room Sports Community model that I've designed to better serve athlete business owners, our sports business members, and sports focused non-profits. Personally, I’m stepping into finding purpose in pain, and making a difference in the lives of kids is how I do that. I’m dedicating myself to using my sports business projects to generate funds for further research into early onset bipolar and using my platform to create awareness of this poorly understood condition. Bipolar that starts as a young child is more severe and complex than adult onset bipolar, and the life outcomes are worse. Since childhood, this condition has ruined my life more times and in more ways than I can count. I will consider my life a waste if I can’t find a way to help other kids not end up like me.
