Kudos to the big names who signed the "VCs for Kamala" pledge. But do you know who started it? So important! Read on... On July 22, Leslie Feinzaig, the GP of Seattle early-stage firm Graham & Walker, decided she was going to do something about the narrative re: who tech is supporting this election. The previous weeks, as you know, had been full of stories about how some very famous VCs were supporting the GOP nominee. He was going to be better for business, they said. Better for tech. They’re very successful, so ofc folks assumed they knew what they were talking about. But Feinzaig disagreed. A healthy economic future is not at odds with a democratic society, she believed. And, importantly, she knew, the vast majority of tech VCs agree. But that wasn't breaking through. So she bought the domain "vcsforkamala." And then drafted a simple 3-paragraph pledge. Next, she sent it to her networks. Who sent it to their networks. Who sent it to their networks. And now, as you saw in yesterday's big NYT story, hundreds of VCs have signed on. 540 so far (!!) In a matter of days, the narrative shifted. It’s no longer that VCs are willing to sacrifice people’s lives for tax breaks & deregulation. It’s that Silicon Valley overwhelmingly believes in the necessity of strong institutions—that through them, entrepreneurship, business, & the American Dream thrive. But in the wave of excitement around "VCs for Kamala," we’re seeing a common pattern. The focus is on the big names—Reid, Vinod, Mark, Ron. Feinzaig's name is far in the background, if folks are aware of it at all. I’m sure she doesn’t care. But I do. The surge of Zooms last week following the #WinWithBlackWomen gathering made a point of acknowledging who’d led the way. Too often in moments like this, the work of underrepresented groups gets co-opted, or erased. The conversation around "VCs for Kamala" could leave the impression that the most powerful in Silicon Valley realized there was a problem and took steps to fix it. But they didn’t. They followed a VC from Seattle. A woman. A Latina. An immigrant from Costa Rica, who came to the US to attend HBS, and then worked for "Innovator's Dilemma" guru Clayton Christensen, before heading to Microsoft. In 2017, Feinzaig created the Female Founders Alliance, and then she launched Graham & Walker (named for Katharine Graham & Madam CJ Walker). Everyone in Seattle knows and respects the work she does getting startups off the ground. As we remember the history of this moment, it’s important to remember who stepped up first. Just as we should in our workplaces. When we don’t acknowledge where great ideas & contributions originate, we perpetuate narratives that only certain people lead—and therefore that only certain people are *capable* of leading. Which is why so many Zoom organizers made a point of acknowledging #WinWithBlackWomen. So similarly, let’s not forget who led the charge in tech.
