Lately to me, it seems that personifying the demographics of various age groups for discussion purposes is being taken too far. Hotel tech companies have used generational myths to oversell the need for the latest and greatest shiny new tech toys they claim are must-haves for the rising generations of hotel guests. Hotel brands have been launched, amenities have been changed, training programs have been altered, and HR recruitment methods have been influenced — all to meet the needs of these imaginary generational groupings. What’s worse though, is that there seems to be an awful lot of what I call “generational bashing” taking place in conversations around the workforce these days. Today’s younger workers are really not that much different than previous generations. Rather than reinforcing negative stereotypes, let’s refocus our efforts on mentoring, coaching, and training them. Chances are that when you look back at your career, there was someone who saw something in you that you did not yet see in yourself, and who made it their job to mentor and coach you along. According to Hilton Hotels & Resorts' 2025 trend report that same trend is also impacting travel with 50% doing so solo. A recent study by Stanford University School of Medicine may have identified a way of generating new neurons in aging or injured brains. As part of this study, however, there appears to be new evidence in the tie between glucose, metabolism and cognitive health. We talk about the impact of GLP-1 drugs on sweets consumption but should studies continue to tie glucose to cognitive decline and other serious issues, this will have a much greater impact on both consumer behavior and legislation than these drugs. A presentation by Populous on foodservice design was incredibly interesting. The thoughtfulness they put not only into the visual impact but the story telling behind all of the elements, and ways to create design that facilitated hospitality and staff connecting more emotionally with guests including pictures on a wall that could be removed to view batting practice, but you'd only know about that because the staff could demonstrate it thus starting a conversation. 5. #Climate change is having a range of impacts, none more startling than what happened in Asheville last month. We're seeing climate immigration, accelerated erosion, and now shifting country borders. Thankfully, the border between Switzerland and Italy isn't changing because of geopolitical aggression but rather a melting glacier.
