Wisconsin hospitals and elected officials could be doing more to help people burdened by #MedicalDebt. While hospitals have varying levels of financial assistance, some Wisconsin health care providers have been sending unpaid bills to collections at increased rates. Some even sue patients, which can negatively impact their credit score and limit access to jobs, housing and other necessities. “For a lot of people having health issues, they’re facing a lot of stress,” Bobby Peterson, executive director of our partners ABC for Health, Inc. said. “They probably have other medical bills. It’s a very challenging environment for both their physical and mental health.” It’s also worth noting that states that have expanded #Medicaid have seen sizable declines in medical debt – a move Wisconsin has not yet taken to provide relief to its residents.
