Recently, I had an interesting moment during a grant evaluation for a program we manage that provides grants to enhance the infrastructure of small, African American-owned farms in the Black Belt of Alabama (these grants promote enhanced levels of production, and we then enter into procurement agreements with these farmers, with the produce entering into our flagship feeding and nutrition programs). While discussing the grant, one of the evaluators questioned why we were not promoting organic farming methods. It's important to note that many of these farms have significant infrastructure deficiencies due to historical denial of credit and funding by lending agencies and the USDA. Our priority is to provide access to capital that will allow these farmers to function at better than nominal levels. The question that I was asked was not misplaced - it was out of place. Organic farming is an ideal state for any agricultural concern but it is light years from the immediate and pressing concerns of both the farming cohort that we were in partnership with and frankly the majority of these farmers who work largely of a subsistence level. If institutional funders are going to solicit proposals for specific needs, concerns, etc - it is critical that their staff members have a deep understanding of those issues and concerns so that inquiry drives credible evaluation. The funder passed. And that was probably for the best.

If you work for a small nonprofit like I do, you probably know that it's hard to find time to work on planned giving. Planned gifts don't usually help you reach that all-important year-end fundraising goal, and there's a lot of technical terminology that, as a new fundraiser, you may not feel confident in discussing with donors. In this article, I will give you lots of reasons why you should be promoting planned gifts, a feasible plan to get started, and help demystify some of the basic terminology. National Estate Planning Awareness Week (NEPAW), held annually during the third week of October, is a prime opportunity for nonprofits to highlight the importance of estate planning and the opportunities of estate gifts. The goal of NEPAW is to increase public awareness of the need for proper estate planning, which can benefit individuals and their chosen charitable organizations significantly. My hope is this article will spur you to prepare now to fully leverage National Estate Planning Awareness Week so planned giving leads come to you!
