What do you do if your entrepreneurial venture fails and you need to bounce back?
I tell all of my teams that I want them to fail. It sounds harsh, and I get the oddest looks when I say that! "You want us to fail?" they ask. I tell them that, in life, we all learn the most when we fail. I tell them that when (not if) they fail in their endeavors, they will have two choices: 1) they can either wallow in their self-pity and self-doubt and probably make the same mistakes over and over again in their lives, or 2) they can evaluate what went wrong, learn from the failure and their mistakes, try it again in a different way, and ultimately become more and more successful. The latter is what I want my teams to do, of course. I want my teams to become learning machines!

You want to get a promotion. How do you get your boss to notice you?
My son was just promoted to an Assistant Manager's position in a museum and I asked him why they chose him over anyone else. He said to me, "Dad, when I see stuff that needs to be done, I just go do it." That's called initiative, and leaders notice when the work gets accomplished without having to tell someone to do it. Over time, that's what makes an impression. Over time that shows a commitment to the work, to the customers, and to the organization. Over time, that's how promotions are earned.
